Custom Home Decor with New Neighbor Designs

Refresh your home while supporting refugee artisans. This winter and spring, New Neighbor Designs offers custom sewing services through our sewing entrepreneurship training program. You purchase the materials, and our trained to beautiful, custom-made pieces while building valuable job skills. When your order is complete, you may choose to make a donation to the program—100% of which goes directly to the artisans.

What Our Artisans Can Make

  • Pillow and cushion covers (no furniture slipcovers at this time)
  • Duvet covers and blankets
  • Table runners, tablecloths, placemats, and napkins
  • Café curtains (no Roman shades or full drapes)
  • Simple accessories such as tote bags, makeup bags, and other small bag

How It Works

  1. Submit your order using this ORDER FORM. If you have questions or want to discuss your project first, contact us info@homesnotborders.org, including in your email header: "custom order"
  2. Purchase or gather materials for your project (repurposed materials are welcome). We can advise on fabric requirements after you submit the form. Local fabric stores include:
  • Fabric Place Basement (Alexandria, VA)
  • G Street Fabrics (Rockville, MD)
  • Three Little Birds Sewing Co. (Hyattsville, MD)
  • Sarah Fabrics (Takoma Park, MD)
  1. Drop off or mail materials to Tilden House Studio, 3401 Tilden St, Brentwood, MD 20722. We can also coordinate pick-up in parts of DC (Brookland, Woodridge) and nearby Maryland communities, including Brentwood, Mt. Rainier, North Brentwood, Hyattsville, and College Park.
  2. Production takes 3–4 weeks. When your order is ready, we’ll contact you to arrange pickup or delivery.
  3. Make a contribution (optional). If you’re happy with the result, you may donate to the New Neighbor Designs sewing entrepreneurship initiative (see the suggested contribution chart). All funds go directly to the artisans and support their portfolios, experience, and confidence.

Contributions are optional, but 100% go directly to the artisans, support them and their families.


pILLOWS / BOX CUSHIONS


  • Plain / knife edge: length + width x $0.80 (For example, a pillow that is 18 x 18” would total $28.80
  • Pre-made piping: length + width x $0.90 (For example, a pillow that is 18 x 18” would total $32.40
  • Self-welted: length + width x $1.20 (For example, a pillow that is 18 x 18” would total $43.20
  • Flange: length + width x $1.10 (For example, a pillow that is 18 x 18” would total $39.60
  • Box cushion: length + width + height (in inches) multiplied by $1.80. For example, a cushion that is 30” long, 18” wide, and 3” high would total $91.80 (30 + 18 + 3) x $1.80 = $91.80


DUVET COVERS / BLANKETS


  • Twin: $60-80
  • Full: $80-100
  • Queen: $100-120
  • King: $120-150


TABLE GOODS


  • Table cloths (rectangle): length + width x $0.60 (For example, a table cloth that is 90” long by 60” wide would total $90)
  • Table cloths (circular): diameter x $1.50 (for example, a table cloth with a 60” diameter would total $90)
  • Table runners: length + width x $0.60 (For example, a runner that is 72” long by 11” wide would total $49.80)
  • Napkins: $10 each
  • Placemats: $15 each


CURTAINS


  • Finished length + width x $0.40 (For example, a curtain that is 60” long and 40” wide would total $40 per panel)


BAGS/ACCESSORIES


  • These can vary widely based on what you are having made and whether you want zippers, lining, pockets, etc. We can provide a suggested donation range based on your specific project.
