COVID 19 Response
During the COVID-19 crisis, here is what we are doing to help within the CDC guidelines while protecting the safety of our staff, volunteers and refugee & SIV friends.
DONATION PICK UPS
Due the "Stay at Home Orders" in place as of March 31st/April 1st in the D.C. metro area, Homes Not Borders will halt any donation pick up until the order is lifted in Maryland.
HOME SET UPS
Refugee arrivals are on hold until after April 6th, but Homes Not Borders will still help any SIV (special immigrant visa) holders that come to the United States on their own. (Travel for nonprofit volunteers and staff helping those in need is allowed under the "Stay at Home Orders".) If and when we do provide assistance, we will do so under these guidelines
- Clean all hard surfaces of furniture before moving items
- Require hand washing from all before move in starts
- Provide all the volunteers with work gloves
- - Minimize time in SIVs apartment as much as possible
We picked up our first wood shipment last week and were going to start one-on-one apprenticeship lessons this very week! But that, too, is also put on hold as not to compromise the health of students or teachers. One teacher is currently working in his home shop to put together some samples and plans, so we are ready to go when people can gather together again!
Homes Not Borders was planning on a fundraising dinner - complete with a Syrian and Afghan food spread - at the end of May but are postponing that until a yet to be determined later date when it is safe to gather in large groups.
In the meantime, if you income has not been effected by COVID-19, consider donating money directly to support the work Homes Not Borders is currently doing under these restrictions and our job training and set up work, that will likely ramp up once things settle down. So DONATE TODAY!
HOW YOU CAN HELP NOW!!!
There are still ways we can help our refugee and SIV friends during this time, even if we can't have them in our office or workshop or visit with them! Many existing refugee families have moved and/or grown their family since resettling and need some new items, so we are starting Amazon Wishlists for these families. Here are the first two, but we hope to add others in the near future, so check back periodically. All items will be shipped directly to their home. And please feel free to include a note along with the gift!
