Home Set Ups
The first step in making a refugee feel at home is simply providing them with a welcoming and comfortable place to live. Many of these families are coming from refugee camps or other places that are a far cry from feeling like home.
Homes Not Borders provides all the required furnishings and household items, according to the UNHCR, for newly arriving refugee families. We also add special touches like rugs, pictures, small kitchen appliances, side tables, and toys that help to make a house a home. Without our assistance the average refugee would have to use $380 out of their already meager stipend!
We also provide the same assistance to asylum seekers and, when available, we provide refugees already living here with additional household items.
In 2018, we set up homes for 57 refugee families – saving them a total of $94,240 and providing additional items for 43 refugee and asylum-seeking families.
Household Item Donations
For all refugee home set ups we need furniture and household items! Our volunteers collect smaller donations on their own, and we do a large furniture pick-up typically one or two Sundays a month. All the donations are put to use right away or put into storage for future use.
If you are a recently arrived refugee, and are in need of household items, please fill out the form here, and some will get back you.
