Storytelling Show 2026
Join HNB at Imagination Stage for an evening of powerful true stories told live. Each storyteller will share a personal moment from their own life—funny, moving, or surprising—that reminds us how much we all have in common. The difference? Everyone on stage has a forced migration background.
We are thrilled that the evening will be hosted by Alexandra Petri, award-winning humor writer and staff writer for The Atlantic, former Washington Post columnist, whose work has appeared in McSweeney’s, and The New Yorker.
Come for the show but also come early to bid on great items at our silent auction, buy raffle tickets, and shop for artisan items sold by the refugee artisans themselves who will be there.
Check out one of the stories from last year - from HNB's very own Warehouse Manager, Amal Abuldood.
TICKETS: $45
If you are interested in sponsoring the event at any level from $1,000 to $20,000, please email Development Director Amy Wrona at amy@homesnotborders.org. For more info and benefits check out our SPONSORSHIP LEVELS.
What is Storytelling?
Homes Not Borders’ storytelling program gives refugees and other forced migrants a voice and platform to tell their personal stories. The art of storytelling is as old as spoken language but its popularity as a form of spoken word performance is only a couple of decades old. Made popular by programs such as The Moth, Radiolab, and Story District, stories are true, autobiographical retellings of events of a person’s life recounted live in spoken form in 10 minutes or less. We believe that, when a person can tell the events of their lives with confidence, authenticity, humor, and depth, the very act of telling their story helps heal traumas faced from their journey here, amplifies their voices to our greater community, and enriches all of us by helping us better understand the refugee friends and neighbors who live among us.
In partnership with The Moth, our classes benefit our refugee and forced migrant friends by strengthening English language skills, improving communication skills for work and at home, and giving confidence in speaking in front of a group of people.
