Today, August 15th, marks the 1 year anniversary o Today, August 15th, marks the 1 year anniversary of the Fall of Kabul to the Taliban. Since then, nearly 100,000 Afghans have been forced to flee home and begin the process of being resettled in the US. Most left with only what they could carry including our friend Wali. When asked what he was able to bring with him, he sent this photo and said:

"This picture was taken the very first evening of [the] Fall of Afghanistan (August 15, 2021). Overnight, all the achievements and dreams of me and every other Afghan who worked for 20 years, day and night, to build the country were shattered. A picture I will always carry with myself. It always reminds me of that last sunset in Kabul, the last sunset of many dreams not to be dreamt again and of a life that would never be lived again.

We left our country leaving everything behind and losing everything. I carry with myself a silent smile though. I have always smiled at every problem and pain in my life. Leaving your roots and just carrying the memories with yourself, is not easy. But just like every other Afghan who has always fell and stood again, I will carry the smile with me to keep alive my roots and the passion that we will stand again. It is not the end! :)"

- Wali
